Longtime GOP pollster Frank Luntz stated it’s “mind-blowing” to him that Donald Trump seems to not perceive one easy factor that — if he did — would put the previous president “within the driver’s seat” on key election themes.
CNN’s Brianna Keilar on Tuesday famous what seems just like the neck-and-neck nature of the 2024 election between Republican nominee Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Keilar requested Luntz what must occur for both candidate to “get away” and take the lead in polling.
“Let me be specific,” Luntz replied. “It’s not, in truth, the financial system; it’s affordability. It’s costs for housing and well being care, for meals and gasoline. And this has been the problem now for the final yr.”
Affordability is Trump’s “strongest case for his presidency” and Harris’ weakest, he continued. “And but Trump doesn’t appear to need to make it.”
Trump can be “within the driver’s seat on the 2 key points, immigration and affordability” if he did, argued Luntz.
“It’s mind-blowing to me that Trump doesn’t appear to know this and that Harris has not been extra forthcoming concerning the particulars of her financial plan,” he added. “Each of these are important to the result and each of these makes an observer like me surprise, ‘What the heck is happening?’”
